Shoes and Hammertoe

When the second toe bends up at the middle joint, it may be indicative of a condition that is known as hammertoe. This is considered to be a deformity, and can cause difficulty in walking. In severe cases, these deformed toes can resemble hammers, and may require surgery to permanently straighten the toes. Hammertoe can occur from genetic factors, or from wearing high heels, or tight shoes. Many times, these types of shoes do not provide adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Some patients find mild relief when specific toe stretches are performed, and custom made insoles are worn. If surgery is performed, it can take several weeks for a full recovery, and a special shoe may need to be worn. If you suffer from hammertoe, please speak with a podiatrist when the first symptoms appear, so a proper diagnosis can be made and treatment can be started.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Omega Podiatry. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.

How Cracked Heels Form

When the skin on the heels dries out, it loses its elasticity and thickens. The pressure of everyday activities like walking and standing often proves to be too much for dried out skin, and cracks are more likely to appear. Cracked heels can be uncomfortable, especially if the cracks are deep. Putting weight on the heels may even become painful. The potential causes of cracked heels include having naturally dry skin, living in a dry climate, standing for prolonged periods of time, being overweight, and wearing shoes that expose your heels to the air. Fortunately, there are many medical treatments and home remedies for cracked heels. For more information about treatment options, please consult with a podiatrist.

Cracked heels are unsightly and can cause further damage to your shoes and feet. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists from Omega Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Do You Get Them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – Wearing socks with medicated creams helps lock in moisture.

Moisturizers – Applying both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – These exfoliate and remove dead skin, which allows for smoother moisturizer application and better absorption into the skin.

Change in Diet

Eating healthy with a well-balanced diet will give the skin a fresh and radiant look. Your body responds to the kinds of food you ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc supplements can also revitalize skin tissue.

Most importantly, seek professional help if unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels. A podiatrist will help you with any questions or information needed.

Severe pain and discomfort often accompany the foot condition known as gout. Many patients experience pain in the joints of the big toe and it can be difficult to walk. It occurs as a result of excess uric acid in the blood and may develop from genetic factors. Additionally, research has indicated that eating specific foods may trigger gout attacks due to high levels of purines. These can include seafood, red meat, and beverages that are made with large amounts of sugar. Foods that may lessen the onset of gout can consist of fruits, low-fat dairy products, and recipes that are made with plant-based oils. There are many patients who have changed their eating habits to include brown rice, chicken dishes, and various vegetables, and have found success in managing bouts of gout. If you would like to find out more information about what foods to eat that can help to prevent gout attacks, please consult with a podiatrist.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
